Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the process of getting your website to the top positions in search engine results such as Google, Yahoo and Bing.

How do search engines work?

The aim of the search engine is to deliver to the user a list of the MOST RELEVANT results to that person’s location and search term. Every search engine has it’s own ‘ALGORITHM’, for determining exactly which websites are most relevant for the search term entered into the search engine. The results genrated on the left hand side, below the sponsored ads and map results are the ‘organic’ search results.

So, for example, if a user searches ‘Opticians in London’, search engines such as Google will generate results that are aimed to being relevant and useful for that user.

Optimisation of any website involves a number of different processes which enable search engines to rank your website higher up the search engines than other websites.

Every word or term typed into a search engine by a user is termed a ‘keyword’ or ‘keyterm’. Different terms will generate different results, even if the terms are similar. For example, Opticians will generate different results to ‘Optician’.

Optimising your website effectively means your website will be above those of your competitors for multiple keywords and keyterms, and so will enhance the chances that the user will visit your website and inturn, increases the chance of he or she becoming one of your patients
